Below is a guide to the key documents you should gather before starting your Lemon Law claim.
Purchase or Lease Agreement
Your purchase or lease agreement provides essential details—such as purchase date, warranty terms, and whether the vehicle was new, leased, or Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)—all of which help determine California Lemon Law eligibility.
It also establishes the timeline, since California allows six years from the original owner’s purchase date to file a Lemon Law claim.
Repair Orders & Repair Invoices (Most Critical)
Every time you take your car to the dealership for warranty repairs, the service advisor creates a repair order. This document includes:
- Your complaint or symptoms
- The dealership’s findings
- Diagnostic notes
- Parts replaced
- Repairs performed
- Dates the vehicle was at the dealership
You should always request a copy when you drop off your vehicle and when you pick it up. These repair records are the foundation of your Lemon Law case.
Current Vehicle Registration
A copy of your DMV registration helps confirm ownership and is required for settlement documents.
Receipts for Related Expenses
Keep receipts for any expenses caused by your defective vehicle, such as:
- Uber/Lyft rides to and from the dealership
- Rental car costs if not covered by the manufacturer while the car was at the dealership
- Towing expenses
- Parking fees related to service visits
Many of these expenses can be reimbursed.
- The defect occurred during the warranty period
- You gave the dealership a reasonable opportunity to repair the vehicle under the warranty
- The issue impacts the use, value, or safety of the vehicle
The documents listed above help establish each of these elements clearly and quickly.
